Over this last weekend, there was a bit of a world-shattering event on the Atlas game server we play on – due to a previously unknown bug, all player data was corrupted and lost. Despite a long weekend of troubleshooting with Grapeshot and G-Portal, the admins who ran the server set were forced to give up and perform a full world reset and wipe.
This was painful, since it was not only the second time in a couple of months (the first time shortly after we started, so not a big impact to us), but it was immediately after we had finally launched our Mythic galleon, ready to sail the seas and sink all opponents.
It was also problematic, since I have been out of town all week, and unable to log back into the game, to either recover the lost levels or start the rebuilding process. In truth, I am not sure I even want to – the excitement is from building something the first time – repeating is redundant and relatively boring.
However, I do want to commend the admins for the diligence. Although this is a sideline hobby effort for them, they sacrificed their weekend and vacation time to try to resolve the problems and support their player base. I honestly believe they tried every option they could, this simply comes down to issues with a pre-release game and the risks that includes.
