Small resurgence of Star Wars recently, first with X-Wing, and now with the opportunity to play some Legion. The terrain was rather limited (not sure where my hills and trees are, or if I still have them), but the game mat and the 3d-printed Turbolaser tower worked well, along with the game’s included barricades. As is notable, my painting is far behind, and it was a battle of grey on grey figures. Neither factor fortunately impacted the enjoyment of the game though, which played much better than I had previously recalled.
The army lists were rather basic – I assembled them quickly more as a focus on including as many different units as possible rather than truly working on a balanced force for either side. This was mainly since neither of us have really played the game much, so it was good to see what they could and could not do. For the Empire, their big hitters were Death Troopers, Emperor Palpatine, Boba Fett, and of course an AT-ST. For the Rebellion, we fielded an Air Speeder, and the stationary Laser Cannon team, with Han Solo and Chewbacca for leadership.
Battle selection ended up with Disarray deployment, with an Intercept the Transmissions mission objective. The battle was complicated by Limited Visibility, which ended up far more helpful to the Empire than the Rebels.
My son was playing the Empire, and focused most of his forces on one corner, while the AT-ST and two squads of stormtroopers grabbed the opposite corner. For the Rebels, the Airspeeder and a AT-RT covered the far corner, with all other forces in the opposite.
For the first couple of turns, the Rebels were at a disadvantage. Playing a bit counter-intuitive, I opted to push forward rapidly for most units, to try to claim the objectives. However, this caused my units to be unable to shoot either do to visibility or action limitations, while the Empire was able to generally just stand and blast away at the approaching forces. By turn two, I had claimed all 3 objectives, taking a solid lead, but both the AT-RT and Airspeeder were heavily damaged, and my Rebel Troopers were blasted by the Imperial AT-ST.
For the mid-point of the game, the tide began to turn. Although the Empire managed to destroy the Airspeeder and AT-RT, completely clearing that end of the board, the rest of the Rebels dug in in the middle and opposite side. The Wookie warriors rapidly chewed thru a stormtrooper squad, and the combined fire of several troopers and the now in range (thanks to visibility) Laser Cannon managed to take out the AT-ST. Han Solo secured the central location, taking cover behind a barricade, and rapidly blasting away at the large force of Imperials.
The last couple of turns we glossed over quickly – by that point the Rebels had a commanding lead in victory points. In the positions, there was little chance of the Empire claiming the central point (Han Solo turned out to be a damage beast), and the one victory point they did control was insufficient to turn the tide. After Han had defeated the Emperor and the squad of Snowtroopers, we called it quits with a Rebel Victory.
