Last week was a challenging week for my routine schedule for several factors. Intentionally, and planned for a long time, was that I was attending Scouting Camp with my son’s, with limited access to a computer or the internet. Less intentional and definitely not planned, was that I was laid off (aka, made redundant, work force reduced, position eliminated) on that Friday morning.
This came as a surprise, since not only do I have 25+ years of service with the company, but our particular client contract has my name explicitly in the service definition – without me, the company is in breach of contract. The separation package was not very strong, with only a 8 week’s of pay benefit, and the minimum government mandated medical coverage. Needless to say, this made last week a bit more distracting, as my scheduled vacation became an unpaid leave.
Fortunately, due to the interaction of the CTO of the client company (who knows me and my work directly), my company has since reconsidered, and is now working to re-establish my job with the business. These sorts of things are rarely quick, and definitely not fast, but it is at least good news for now. As a side benefit, although my cell phone and work computer are no longer functional, I do get a stress free vacation for the short term, while they figure out the paperwork. Once everything settles, it should be back to as if they had never made that decision at all.
If it all falls thru again though, then as of Monday it will be back to the job search for a replacement job. Although the website and my YouTube efforts may someday pay a small amount, thus far it is a far cry away from being any true income.
FYI, my real day job is that of an Account Delivery Manager in the IT field – it is my job to coordinate the teams the configure, support, install, manage and maintain a client computer and network infrastructure. If it breaks, it is on me to gather the correct team to fix the issue as soon as possible, and provide technical guidance to direct the teams to the best solution.
