Expired silicon

Apparently, when the silicon material I had for mold-making indicated that it had a limited shelf life, they were telling the truth. On Friday, I attempted to craft the molds for the chocolate dice, and found that the material had gone most definitely bad. In my case, I was going to be using Oomoo 30, by Smooth-On.

Unfortunately, the two part mixture had changed, and it was no longer usable. In the case of the blue part – the ingredients had separated into a think blue gel, with a clear liquid, with very harsh fumes. Initially I considered stirring it to recombine. Then we opened the pink side, and found that the material had completely gel-ed into a semi-firm solid – completely unmixable.

In truth, this is no fault of the silicon – the labels clearly stated that it had a limited shelf-life, and it had sat for more than a year. I had just hoped that since it had not had the seal broken that perhaps it would still be usable – no such luck.

New plan is to potentially acquire fresh silicon, or quite likely at this stage, simply order a pre-made mold. Would prefer the home-made option, but pre-made molds are admittedly cheap compared to the silicon itself – and typically more professional in composition.
