We managed to play the first couple of turns of our Legion game on Monday night, with my Separatist army vs my son’s revised Empire army. Mistakes were made, forces were killed, and thus far the game is a draw per the objectives. I am leaning towards an Empire victory by the end of the game.
In round one, the Empire consolidated their forces, and lined up their numerous snipers. Iden Versio and several scout units fired repeatedly, wounding both Grievous and Dooku from long range. They also softened the nearby B1 battle droids. For the Separatists, I managed to get a few early kills against the stormtrooper rocket team, but not enough to wipe them out.
In round two, I made my first major tactical error, and charged Grievous up far too fast. Attempting to use his whirlwind attack to damage and destroy multiple units, he raced into the middle of the Empire line. His attacks sadly only resulted in two casualties, and minimal suppression. The Empire’s response was swift, the snipers cutting down the Jedi-hunter. Then then followed up with a solid rocket launch against the AAT, damaging it with a couple of hits.
Without one of my generals, my side is a bit weak, but I have Dooku, the Droidekas, and the AAT all threatening Operative Vader in the middle of the field. My rapid reinforcements of the B2 Super Battle Droids came in behind the Imperial lines, which should do some heavy damage as well. However, the wall of snipers continues to harass and limit my options for Dooku, who is already injured.
I am finding that I have apparently taught my son perhaps a bit too well – his tactical mind and ability to adapt to the game mechanics is very good. He has quickly figured out several synergies with his snipers and units and their abilities, and knows when to hold back and when to push with orders. More importantly, he is watching the big picture of the game – the only reason the game is a draw at this point is because he moved forward multiple units for one objective, without me realizing. Prior games, the focus was entirely on decimating the enemy.
