In preparation for our Carrion Crown campaign, my prop-master (the wife) was tasked with coming up with a variety of game aids and props for the story. Things that would impart the setting, be tactile, and perhaps provide further background and clues. The entire group was very impressed with the results.
The simplest of these is the Haunt Siphon – in the story it is described as a small device made of glass, filled with a glowing gas. The magic item is used to capture and absorb spiritual and necromantic energy, store it, and then discharge it like a grenade when broken. However, a small glass tube is rather fragile, and there was no way to fill it with glowing gas, so we altered the item a bit.
Instead, we have a “cold-iron” orb, which surrounds a crystal. The crystal can be charged with necromantic energy to trap a haunt, and then discharged as a grenade to target a foe with the same energy. With this alteration, the magic item is now re-usable – able to charged and discharged repeatedly.
In reality, this is a small battery powered necklace charm my wife found on Etsy I believe. With batteries, it pulses an eerie blue glow, which is great for the charged condition. Sadly the batteries only last about 12 hours, but they are cheap and plentiful, so easily swapped out.
