In my effort to address the audio issues of the last game, I am working on printing a set of low-profile microphone stands. Part of the issue is the need for more microphones – more mics, better sound in general. However, a mic cannot just lay on the table, and the existing tripods I have are small, but not small enough. In place, each microphone stands over the digital table screen and is ugly at least, a distraction at worst. With a little bit of searching, I found this design, which lowers the mic by about 6 inches, and should make it far more unobtrusive. The cables are then concealed until the digital table.
The other alternative would be for me to use lavalier mics or something similar, and route them under the table (or buy wireless). Given that the group is 10 players, and wireless is not cheap, this is functionally a non starter. My audio system can handle multiple inputs (but not 10), so this is the best option I currently have available. The other alternative is to wall or ceiling mount the mics, which would work in concept, but I am not prepared to cause that level of damage to the walls as of yet. Several of these stands are quick and cheap, and cause no lasting impact if they don’t work out.
