The next in our line of props for our Carrion Crown campaign is the book entitled Serving Your Hunger – intended as a religious book and reference for the cult of Urgathoa. Functionally, a diety of cannibals, this was the one which the prop master likely spent the most effort to flesh out.
The book itself is described as bound with metal plates – in our case we did thick card stock, colored to resemble rusty metal. The pages were stained roughly with coffee, leaving a lingering scent, and then the overall collection was stitched together by hand. Several of the pages were stained inconsistently on purpose, to represent the water and age damage. Once assembled, we then added hand written notes in the pages, as a reference from the story of notes taken by the professor or other readers.
Of course, the campaign only provides a simple description of the book, very little content is detailed. So for this, a bit of internet searching on poems, phrases and similar details, and some creative writing filled out the body of the material. A few specialized gaming spells were adapted for the appetizer of the cult, and a handful of recipes filled out the tasty bits. These recipes were fun on their own – other than some creative adjustments in ingredient titles, they are all actual recipes that could be produced. These included Rump Roast (female is best) and Lady Finger Lady Fingers.
As with all of the props, the hints, clues, and information included directly related to the story and campaign the group is adventuring thru. Many of the clues are hidden in the books, in the text or otherwise, and likely not all of them will be discovered by the group.
Once the campaign concludes, this will likely find a prime location in my collection of memories from past story lines.
