On Thursday, I shared the progress of the gaming table top section, and that the various pieces were now cut, assembled, and otherwise drying. Following our gaming sessions this weekend, I now had time to validate that they actually fit (they do), and accomplish the original goal. Most importantly, that the various pieces slot together into a single large surface.
As intended, all pieces work and function well together – there is actually no mistakes so far. This increases the surface area from 39 inches by 103 inches (3 1/4 foot by 8 3/4 foot) to an even 4 foot by 10 foot size. By my math, this adds approximate 43% to the available space – something that is very notable sitting at the table. The tradeoff is a higher level by about 2 inches, which provides space under the surface to hide and route cables and wiring.
Next step is some measurements and the cutting of slots and holes to access those cables, then a coating of stain and finishing of the surface. Given that our gaming schedule will be hit and miss over the next few weeks, this should give me plenty of time to wrap up the effort.
As an extra step, I had planned to attach latches under each panel, to hold them tightly together as a single large piece. From the heft and bulk of the assembly though, I am not yet convinced that it is necessary. I will have to experiment a bit further, but I commit to the extra expense.
