No pictures yet, but we appear to be finally in the home stretch of George’s Eagle Project for Scouts. This has been a long time coming, and we are eager to be finally finished with the effort. As previously posted, he is conducting a project to produce and install several book libraries, for a local church, to be placed in public spaces at local parks. This will allow families to donate or retrieve books as desired, and provide a community service.
To complete this, it requires quite a few hours of construction on the boxes themselves – basically designed as oversized birdhouses. The local city will be installing poles for them to be placed on – George is responsible for the boxes themselves. They are constructed from 3/4-inch plywood, sealed with weather sealant to prevent rain damage, and then painted with several layers of bright red paint. The doors will have a clear plexiglass window, and a pair of hinged panels. For one of the boxes, the church requested a larger cabinet, in order to house food donations and supplies as well.
All of this was supposed to be done and finished last fall, but several project delays and then the cold winter led to an extended pause on the work. As there have been warm days, we made some progress, now the temperatures are getting comfortable again and the final stages can be completed. The boxes are almost fully assembled, but there are a few remaining steps:
- Finish and repaint all surfaces
- Attach the ceiling panels
- Touch up and finish sealing the ceiling and any remaining gaps
- Touch up painting
- Install the plexiglass panels in the doors
- Attach the doors
- Deliver and complete the project
Tonight, my son has a group of friends coming over to tackle the next stage of painting, after we applied the first layer of caulking yesterday. Once that is dry, we will attach the ceilings, and start with the final steps.
Assuming the weather holds as predicted, I am hoping we can knock this project out once and for all by the end of next week.
If you are in the area and want to contribute, feel free to stop by this evening any time before nightfall and pick up a brush. Might get a bit of red paint on you, but it will all be for a good cause. Or just stop by and let George explain his project to you.
