If you have been following along with our Carrion Crown campaign, the group has been heavily involved in the trial of the century, the trial of a creature known as the Beast of Lepidstadt. A flesh golem with apparent low-level intelligence, the monster is said to have terrorized the local countryside for the last 40 years. Everything from noises at night, failure of crops, citizens that go missing, or even bad weather has been attributed to the creature.
A few days ago, the Beast was captured, after breaking into the local University and stealing a seemingly meaningless artifact, though the artifact was not found. Imprisoned, the city quickly put the creature on trial for a number of his more notable crimes, and have been staging a mostly mock trial before the creature is found guilty and burned to death in the main square.
The group was hired however to investigate the crimes and ensure that the Beast would receive a fair trial – not necessarily to be found as innocent or guilty – just an effort to prove what really happened.
Day 1 was rather unfortunate, with some legal trickier and a lack of investigative skills, the groups testimony did not help the case of the Beast at all. By the end of the first court session, all signs pointed to the monster being the cause of the problems in Morast, with no real explanation against.
Day 2 was a bit better, the group’s investigation had improved, and they found several clues that pointed to valid conclusions. Most importantly, their testimony was more on point, and the results were generally neutral regarding the events at Hergstag.
Day 3 is coming up, and the group has now been distracted by a side investigation – either this course will break the case wide open, or they will waste valuable time that could be used elsewhere. But a portion of the group is now secretly intruding on a suspicious Chemistry factory, owned by a Vorkstag and Grimes. With invisibility and stealth, they hope to find more information, before they are discovered and damage their own cases.
Very interestingly, the group has mixed feelings as to the guilt or innocence of the Beast – their biggest concern is really that it is fair and just. Though as more of the background is revealed, I have the impression that the group is feeling more and more for the plight of the creature and the difficult position it is in.
