With the family heading out in a couple weeks for some vacation time, I find myself with an open schedule. Although I still get to work during most of the time, it does give me the opportunity to try out some unusual gaming options. Most notably, I am planning on a set of one-shot Call of Cthulhu games for the local group. Originally, this was going to be two separate stories, or potentially a single longer one-shot. After evaluating my options, and potential number of players, I ended up opted to simply run the same game twice, for two separate groups. I am curious to see how the different combinations work with the same scenario, for a game which I do not believe any of us have played (at least not in a long time).
The scenario chosen is The Dare, by Kevin A Ross, published by Sentinel Hill Press, and available in PDF format from DriveThruRPG. I have seen more than a few reviews of the scenario recently indicating it as a highly recommended option, and the basics are straightforward enough that I should be able to handle it, even with my limited CoC experience.
Basic premise is simple, it is set in the 80’s, when a group of young kids are dared to spend the night in the old, haunted house of the neighborhood. All they have to do is stay and survive until morning. The adventure has the feel of The Goonies, The Lost Boys, or any of the many other young-adult adventure stories of the 80s. And is just spooky enough to entertain the group.
As a one-shot, I am not particularly worried about character death or insanity, that is normal with CoC. And it should be a welcome break from the high-fantasy heroic adventuring of our regular Pathfinder games.
As usual, look for a live broadcast on Twitch during our sessions.
