Taking on a new big project and attempting to print and build a life-size B1 Battle Droid. This is from a design by Droid Division, and at least from the pictures, it should be rather impressive. Supposedly the final product stands 78 inches tall, so might be a bit imposing as well. Certainly, the full-size droid head I have already printed is intimidating already.
Originally, this started out as a request from the wife to print a model of the Lola bug droid, but when acquiring those models, I opted for the larger project as well (the bug droid was included in the purchase).
Expected print time is at least 2 weeks of printing on my Prusa i3 MKS3+, and an estimate of 8 kg of PLA filament. Numerous pipes, nuts, bolts and other attachments to be added. Add a couple weeks for assembly and painting, and my goal is the end of July for the full droid. My intent is 0.2mm layer height, and 10% infill, unless I find a particular piece is too weak or could benefit from additional details. I don’t believe there is, but if needed, I will be printing any fine details in resin.
So far, the design is very good. A few pieces on the head had to be printed with “small” printer formats, but they go together well and have well designed pins for alignment.
