The new Legion terrain is hopefully finished, and ready to go – I set up a starting play field for the current picture. As designed, the tiles can be rotated four different directions, and generally speaking, continue to line up. The boards are currently supported over our regular gaming setup on a set of fence pickets, which actually helps setup and tear down significantly, along with raising the play surface up a lot.
Construction is based on 18″ squares of 2″ pink insulation foam. From there I either built up or carved into the surface, attaching as necessary with PVA glue. I then covered the entire surface with a mix of tile grout, wool insulation, and water, resulting in a thin cement like material, which was able to be formed and molded around different shapes. After a few days of drying, I then covered the entire surface with thinned PVA glue and sprinkled more tile grout on all the surfaces. Another day of drying, and I started applying multiple layers of paints – starting with a dark grey undercoat, some browns for the hills and dirt, some lighter grey for the stone shapes, and then a heavy coating of bright white everywhere on the landscape. Once this was finished, the last step was several thick layers of gloss sealant, to provide some shine for the “snow”, and a heavy layer of protection.
My process was a bit of experimental trial and error – I will report out just how successful and durable the terrain ends up being.
Other than the terrain itself, it is designed to then be enhanced with additional cover, buildings, and other objects. I have a variety of snow-themed options, and likely will substitute a few others now and then. An open ice field is workable too – though probably a bit boring.
Our first game recording is scheduled for Thursday evening, likely a battle between my son and myself (Clones vs either Empire or Droids), which would then be posted likely on 8/12.
