As we expand our Star Wars Legion games, and look into a few other game systems, I got inspired to create a swamp terrain board. This was heavily inspired by Black Magic Craft on YouTube, in which a similar technique is used to make roads. In my case, I reversed the negative space, and instead created cutout pools. When the terrain is layed on our existing forest gaming mat, the effect is a fairly good “green algae” pool swamp. With a bit of scatter terrain, it is a very nice setup.
The entire base is a single large piece of dense rubber floor mat. Challenging to cut until I figured out the process, then remarkably easy. Per the recipe, I layered this with pre-colored brown caulking and a bit of gravel for texture. From there, the airbrush came out and I used various greens, browns and purples to add depth to the sections.
Once it was all dry, it was very durable, and I am able to roll it up conveniently for storage. Rolled out, it lays flat and works as intended for the pools.
For Legion, we intend to treat the water as difficult terrain providing light cover, the rest of the terrain is open except for whatever scatter terrain is used.
Look for this terrain in Round 3 of our Battle for the Golden Vader Tournament, when the surviving armies travel to Dagobah.
