After having played Twilight Imperium the last few years, we were looking for something new to play, to break up the pattern. After some debate, we settled on Axis and Allies as a long-format game for many players (currently aiming at 9). And of course, since we don’t do much small, I opted for the full global experience of combining the 2nd edition of the Europe and Pacific games into the Global version. I have played versions of the game way back in High School, and always wanted to try a long format event.
This was decided back at the New Year’s TI4 game, and fast forward today when I have the games, I have the pieces, and I am working on props and enhancements (3d printed pieces, laser cut reference boards, etc). Now we are sorting out the date and time for the game, which is proving harder than expected. Originally my thought was July 4th weekend, but people wanted to have “family time” rather than playing a board game. Then the secondary dates interfered with birthdays.
As it stands, we will fit it in sometime likely in April or May, on a weekend to be determined. The plan is to start on a Friday evening, resume Saturday afternoon, and if needed, continue on Sunday. In reality, I have no clear idea how long the game takes – estimates range from the box listing of 6 hours to 24-36 hours. If you have any experience with this, let me know – I really do want to understand. If we start Friday and play Saturday, that gives us about 17-18 hours, plus another 12 if needed on Sunday – which feels like enough. But perhaps it can all be completed in a single long Saturday as well.
Stay tuned for more details, and my enhancements that I am creating for the game.
