As Halloween approaches, we enter into our annual one-shot season for our gaming group. Typically, this time frame is challenging with schedules, so I plan for several games that are shorter, without the long-term commitment of our other campaigns. This also gives us a chance to try out some alternative games, without necessarily being too attached to the characters. In previous years, this was Call of Cthulhu time, with the 80’s adventure “The Dare” being run the first year, and “Salo’s Glory” being run the second year. Both were well received, and we managed to run several groups thru each.

This year, I am mixing it up a bit, and adding the Mothership system to the mix, for hopefully a more solid sci-fi setting (Salo’s Glory was Cthulhu sci-fi, which broke down near the end). We will be running the simple introductory adventure, Another Bug Hunt for a group of players new to the system, with the intent to get thru all of the chapters in one sitting. Realistically, I expect it to be a 12-16 hour session, at least before they are all dead, insane, or potentially have completed it.

Our first session is scheduled for November 2, running from Saturday into Sunday, and depending on interest levels, I will add a second session.

I also have plans to do a short series with Twilight 2000 – potentially as a single day long session, or as a short bi-weekly campaign. More details on that will be forthcoming, once the plans firm up.

Finally, I have been working on a sequel to the successful “The Dare” adventure, with many of the characters who survived making a return in a new location against a new threat, a few years older, but not necessarily any wiser. Several of the group are very eager for this – they enjoyed their characters a lot and would like to see the second chapter. This would certainly be another single day long session, and I am leaning towards either Call of Cthulhu again, or conceivably a modern-day adaptation of Mothership if the system works as well as I think it will. Really, both systems are pretty similar in mechanics, so there is a lot of compatibility.
