I have a set of basic 3d printed marker “disks” that we have been using for Star Wars Legion since the 2.6 update. These are functional and work – they are highly visible with the green on the white background design. However, they are also just flat tokens, and rather boring.
After the first few games, we started thinking about some sort of 3d model to represent the same thing. Of course, we have the old objective markers, and we could just glue those to this tokens and call it a day.
However, I also have a laser cutter, and some engineering background, so I opted for a bit flashier of an option. After a late-night inspiration struck, I designed a scaled model which can be 3d-printed, cut some fluorescent acrylic, and added a tiny LED light source. And now we have a very nice looking, and eye catching, set of Points of Interest markers.
These are easy to assemble – both pieces are threaded to screw together, and then the acrylic is slotted into the top. The base is scaled per the rules definition of 2 inches, and the black PLA works well on the tabletop. Of course, paint can be added for extra detail, but this basic design is very workable.
I am now working on finalizing the design – some of the tolerances are rather tight currently, and then I will be adding this to my Etsy shop as kits of 6 markers. That includes all pieces needed (PLA body, base, acrylic “hologram”, tight light, and spare batteries) to assemble 6 full POI markers for your own game. They will also be showing up in our battle reports, they look really bright on the camera.
As normal, Patreon supporters gain access to the files as well, in case you have a 3d printer and means to cut acrylic, you can craft your own.
