Kingdom Phase
—
by

As part of our ongoing Pathfinder Kingmaker campaign, I have been making an effort to use fully the including meta-game Kingdom rules. These thus far have proven problematic at best, though I understand the intent. I feel strongly though that with this campaign, we want to experience all the subsystems, which hopefully will have a pay off later in the story.
Generally, they break the momentum of the campaign. The group will be adventuring, and then every few sessions we turn to bookkeeping and accounting with an entirely supplemental system. Obviously, this is meant to simulate the management of a kingdom, which is valiant and I think will eventually pay off, but the system is rather dry and really works against the rest of the roleplaying aspects of the game.
After some debate and discussion, we have opted to separate out this section from the main storyline. Our bi-weekly games will be focused on the deeds of the adventuring, crawling dungeons and fighting dragons. Then, on an as needed basis, we will handle the Kingdom management offline with Discord. This will allow those who want to participate the option, without boring those who don’t care for it. Not planning on recording those sessions, but the cliffnotes and summary will be included in the next regular session.
The hope is that will make this process simpler and faster, and allow the main games to just focus on the actual adventure, while still keeping all the accounting detail and forward plans as expected for the campaign.
Leave me your thoughts if you have tried similar ideas, abandoned the kingdom phase entirely, or find it a valuable and exciting piece of the regular story.
